The corner of Illimani Avenue and Castro Street, in front of the almost unnoticed Tomás Frías Square, very close to Murillo Square, is not only part of the heritage of the historic center of La Paz, but of the entire city. Site of outstanding architecture with homes of past centuries wrapped in legends, but also a site renewed and inscribed today in the tourist map of the country thanks to the HB Bronze Coffeebar and the Altu Qala Design Hotel, two projects awarded this year by the city of La Paz, salvataje of the architectural heritage and for its contemporary gastronomic proposal in which the Andean culture and tradition stand out.

Founded just a year ago, the HB Bronze Coffeebar not only managed to attract many admiring looks to its aesthetics, but also comments of approval for the venture and its proposal. Something dazzling that was not the work of a day. According to Boris Alarcón, of the investment group Hierro Brothers that is behind all the concept and support, the restoration work of the building began 10 years ago. Under inspiration of what in design they patented as Modern Urban Archeologie, a good part of the carpentry work of the original building was rescued and the environments were dressed with forgotten antiquities, recomposing them in their functions or adapting them as merely decorative objects. Everything – it is pointed out – restored by young pacemen artisans. “It is not a simple recycling, it is giving functionality to that forgotten ancient aesthetic; from simple antiques to modern and functional design “, say from Hierro Brothers.

And who is behind Hierro Brothers? As far as is known, it is a group of investors for whom German is a very close language, La Paz its cradle and Berlin a place of inspiration. From there, facts: before HB Bronze Coffeebar and Altu Qala Design Hotel created The writers coffee, a project that gave life to the Gisbert Bookstore, one of the oldest in the city, turning it into a literary, political meeting point and tourist in the heart of La Paz.

Leaving the financiers and their investments side by side, sitting at the Bronze Coffeebar: completely restored in its evocative style of the past, it shows a bronze staircase and shows off applications of the same material in the restored furniture that give identity and name to the place. The wooden beams -original of the building- are visible, which, already restored, are integrated and revalue the environment. Flowers, candles and dim lighting lamps take care of the rest of the setting. A very intimate space with Viennese winks and seal of the South American golden years. Easy to move to the time of world wars … Bolivian rubber and mining.

Bronze Coffeebar serves classic high-quality hot drinks, Viennese pastries, sandwiches (Illimani, smoked ham, Hummus llama), tables to share (Achocalla, Andean charcuterie, Chúxña Laja, Trails of the lake), first-line Bolivian wines, juices and beers . The staff, on the other hand, is trained to attend the service naturally (something that many of its customers value).

While drinking coffee, stories about the new hotel, coffee and owners smoke:

-This was a haunted house …

-The biggest haunted was the German who bought it and turned it into a hotel …

-No, actually, the sorcerer, bewitched, is a Bolivian-German …

-They say that the investors bought this house, the one on the front and the one on the side …

-It seems that they have projects for the first time: Chola in Borsalino, a food restaurant

fusion; Kilometer 0, a coffee laboratory; Qalanovo, a bar with a view over La Paz …

The stories smoke. The versions fade or confirm. Legend or not, who laid eyes on the ruined house proved to have a witch’s eye. Convinced of the potential of the deteriorated property, Hierro Brothers had a plan in mind: to turn a forgotten corner and without tourist ambitions into a destination in itself; with a lavish hotel as a center and a unique cafe as a presentation of the style of the renewed conglomerate. No story, just a thing and a house of enchantment. Bronze Coffeebar thus offers a beautiful view of the past and shows an admirable forge of time.
